Avishai Cohen
Continuo

Master Bassist Avishai Cohen has brought his trio &  Amos Hoffman together in a new release entitled, Continuo. It is an inspiring recording, with fresh compositions and impressive improvisations.  Probably the most single impressive thing about this recording, is how 3 voices sound like a small orchestra.

The compositions reflect a couple of noticeable qualities. First, the tunes were composed as if  Avishai used a figured bass system. A strong classical influence is ever so present. The counterpoint between top and bottom voices moves throughout this recording. It’s an incredible sound, and Avishai makes the bass a wonderful melodic presence throughout. Secondly, the tunes reflect a strong Middle Eastern quality.

Cohen adds Amos Hoffman on the Oud for some of these tunes. This gives the compositions an even more convincing Middle Eastern presence. But it is not just the instrumentation that makes this a great listen. Cohen, Barsh, and Hoffman play such great improvisations on every tune. Guiliana adds to the concept of this music, by making the drums an exquisite counterpoint instrument.

This is just another example of some of the recordings we’ve reviewed here at JR247 that have taken the Jazz idiom and blended it so nicely with cross-cultural influence. The same elements that made many masters before them so great, are ever so present on this recording. Great improvisations and a great feel and groove exist on this CD. I love how the group moves through various metric changes, and make it feel so natural and easy. Their comfortable with the musical phrasing, and it shows by the inspirational playing you’ll hear on Continuo.

I believe Avishai has many more great contributions in him. He’s a gifted composer, who’s not afraid to use all of his cultural resources to create new music. He’s also a master bassist, who is a splendid improviser. He also has assembled a great band who understands what he wants musically. I hope when you buy this recording you’ll find this music as inspiring as I do. I recommend this CD without hesitation. There are many musical contributions that will attract a variety of jazz listeners to a great and enjoyable listen!
