If you like the standards and classics, combined with groove, joy and get down dirty swing, combined with a world class vocalist, this is a disc for you!!!

Nancy Kelly and company deliver a set that is entertaining and gives you that feeling of spontaneity and groove. This album feels good from the get go and never lets up. It’s music that will grab your attention. Which is a difficult task to accomplish, especially in a time where these tunes have been performed and recorded in so much quanity. They do it without sophisticated arrangements, but on mere talent and personal interpretations. The great qualities of good  jazz musicians their ability to listen and interact with one another. Kelly and company deliver on this throughout Born to Swing.

Dino Losito and the rhythm section are marvelous on this recording. They feel so good, not just on the Swing tunes, but the ballads and bossas as well. Their strength is not in contributing sophisticated harmonies and clever rhythms, but in their ability to swing! I believe anyone who listens to Born to Swing, will hear this out of the box. It’s happy and entertaining music presented to a listening audience. This is done without comprising their artistic goals. The improvisations are very good and appeal to musicians and patrons alike.

Nancy has some great moments on this album. Her scat solo on You’d be So Nice to Come To swings and is very authentic to the idiom. Sometimes singers who are so strong in swing idiom have trouble interpreting ballads. Not Nancy, Check out More Than You Know and Didn’t We. They’re communicated beautifully. The group also captures the moment.

If you’re a Houston Pearson fan as I am, he is a perfect compliment on this disc. Houston swings, and plays in Dexter-like quality on this session. I really like Mark Taylor on drums as well. He feels very good. His symbol work is really nice throughout.

Born to Swing is in our rotation at 247. It’s a requested CD, and people are enjoying Nancy’s music. You will to. She swings, interprets, and entertains her listening audience. If you like swingin’ entertaining Jazz, this is a disc you must buy! For more information, please visit: NancyKelly.com
