What stands out from the get go, is refreshing original compositions written by Laura Caviani. Bob Bowman and Todd Strait join Laura. They do it as if they have been playing together for years. In fact Laura played on and off with Bob and Todd when Karrin Allyson brought her down to KC to play with her and her wonderful band back in the 90s. Laura recorded on Karrin's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th CD's. (I was told she loved Kansas City's Paul Smith (piano phenom!), and loved and admired his playing when hearing him in Kansas City.) Bowman and Strait veterans of the Kansas City musical culture, have played together for years with numerous bands. In fact, they were one of Karrin Allysons favorite rhythm sections when she lived and performed in that area. And why wouldn’t they be? They take this young pianist and make her sound like a New York Jazz professional. Laura is an extremely gifted artist, but all great artists need a supporting cast. Bowman and Strait deliver here, making this trio a sounding force in the world of Jazz. If you like fresh sounding, hip new material, this is a must buy disc. Laura writes in a very melodic fashion. She’s very harmonically rich, and plays with a constant groove. I love her playing. She's playing with maturity beyond her years. The trio, all have room to improvise on this CD. She spreads the improvisation around, so all three have ample opportunity to express themselves. Thus, a warm communication takes place between these three. The trio all possess wonderful sounds on their instruments. I just love Straits symbol work throughout this recording. Bowman plays one masterful improvisation after another! The group also plays with wonderful dynamic contrasts, giving listeners plenty of journey’s and artistic contrasts, to make this a very interesting listen. Bravo Laura, Todd and Bob and gang. You guys sound absolutely terrific!! You’ve made a mark in Jazz, by contributing a beautiful record for all of us musicians and fans!! For more info: www.lauracaviani.com |
