This is an incredible disc! What’s remarkable, is the magic of the “Live” recording comes right through manufactures wrapper! Roseanna Vitro is truly a master artist, vocalist, and jazz performer. Her counterparts in the rhythm section are truly world class as well. From Kenny Werner’s virtuoso performances, Dean Johnson’s beautifully played accompaniments, to the ever tasteful and swinging Tim Horner on drums, this is a disc that everyone who loves vocal music should own!!! This record is a textbook on how to present jazz vocal music. The spontaneous surprises by a Kenny Werner led rhythm section gives the music a precious improvisational dynamic. This fine supporting cast never loses some of the precious moments necessary for a great jazz presentation. Some of the musical highlights include Werner’s ever tasteful accompaniment and masterful improvisations. Werner starts the disc with a bang, with Kenny playing a modern intro. (reminiscent of something off one of his instrumental albums). It’s played at a torrid pace, then brought back to accompany the melody, with Roseanna singing in a half-time feel. Then into a swinging 4/4 feel that makes one want to reach for the stars!! Then Werner improvises over the fast pace he sets up in the beginning. It’s a really exciting performance. Horner really swings and gives the quartet a tasteful, elegant sound through these multiple paced tempos, without ever losing tasteful dynamics and group interplay.
Listeners will also like the choice of musical selections. That is, if they like contrasting musical material. Roseanna is not content to singing many of the standards that so many people sing. She mixes the repertoire offering everything from Randy Newman’s I Think it’s Going To Rain Today, to Brazilian performer’s Djavan’s Serrato to Bill Evan’s Twelve Tone Tune, this live concert offers variety to a cultured listener. What is appreciated, is through the varied styles, the group plays with a creative energy that captures your attention. The improvisation is outstanding from all the performers. Vitro really rises to the occasion on this set, playing and performing with a fabulous world class rhythm section and giving the Jazz world a memorable classic that should be remembered for years to come!
