Don Aliquo
Jazz Folk

Jazz Folk, a new Cd by Don Aliquo pays homage to all the great players who put their creative heart in the playing of Jazz music. Aliquo is joined by an excellent group consisting of Clay Jenkins on trumpet, (Eastman School of Music), the legendary Rufus Reid on Bass, Dana Landry on piano, (a former colleague with don at Middle Tennessee) and Jim White on drums. (An assistant professor at Northern Colorado)

The disc strongly suggests a post-modern, George Russell approach to harmony. This sound is embraced by a strong sense of groove and creativity that will make this an intriguing listen for many.

I particularly enjoyed the contrast of the front-line musicians Aliquo and Jenkins. Their contrasting approach to improvisation is one of the special aspects of this recording. Aliquo, whose soft-spoken, Getz-like approach to sound, is contrasted Jenkins spacious, yet bright trumpet sound. Aliquo also displays flashes of modal-interchange and careful use of scale choices, which displays him an intellectual of harmony when performing. Jenkins on the other hand, while immersed in a post-Russell harmonic approach, uses his space and rhythmic motifs to build interesting solo statements. Clay is a very thoughtful and intuitive improviser, which makes him a perfect choice to contrast Alioquo on the front-line.
