Born in Bombay, a bustling port city on the west coast of India, pianist-composer Ramona Borthwick was introduced to music early in life by her father, who was a professional musician and composer. She began piano lessons at age six, and pursued studies in classical music, earning performance degrees through the Trinity College and Royals Schools of Music, London, UK. In her 20's she discovered jazz piano and vocal stylings. Excited and inspired by the concept of improvisation, she began to explore jazz improvisational skills. 'Sound Matters' (1991), her first recording released in India, was hailed by critics as the first indigenous recording of mainstream/contemporary jazz in India. Ramona's music conveys a lyrical depth, infectious energy and an intuitive flow, free of clichés. Her recently recorded CD ' A New Leaf ' comprises all original compositions as performed by her Quintet featuring Ramona (piano, voice), Phil Grenadier (trumpet), Noel Borthwick (guitar), Fernando Huergo (bass), Ziv Ravitz (drums) and guest Esperanza Spalding (voice). The CD was released May 9th, 2006, on the Whaling City Sound label. After being a resident of Ottawa, Canada for a few years, Ramona moved to Boston, MA where she currently performs and teaches privately. Also a talented graphic artist and web designer, her company Leitmotif specializes in creating websites for the creative arts. |
